CHAPTER EIGHT

“I THINK WE’VE floated enough photos out there for this plan to work,” Gio announced the next morning. She’d come out to the patio to admire the now familiar view of the ocean in the horizon past the infinity pool. She was going to miss this ritual when she had to return to Boston in a few days. “Combined with the leak that we were seen touring an available villa together, I think we’ve got a solid foundation for our fake relationship.”

Why did she cringe inside every time she heard those last two words?

Gio continued, “But just in case, I’ve got one more outing planned for us this afternoon.”

Marni lowered her sunglasses to study him. “Another outing, huh?”

Gio nodded, his smile growing. If she didn’t know any better, she might think he was actually enjoying all this activity. Still, she’d been growing more and more concerned about whether he was overtaxing himself. He’d insisted on walking along the pathway at the base of the lighthouse yesterday so that Marni got the full experience. But she was loath to say anything to him. Gio seemed to take any hint at his vulnerability as some kind of affront.

She could only hope whatever he had planned for today wouldn’t involve too much physical effort. For his sake.

“What kind of activity?”

“The Gardens of Augustus. No trip to Capri would be complete without a visit there.” He plopped himself down on the lounge chair next to her. “And it will give us another chance to be seen out and about together. The gardens are usually full of visitors this time of year. It’s a beautiful day so today will be no different.”

Gio was proven right about the crowd size when they arrived by private car two hours later to the winding pathway that led up to the world-renowned botanical garden.

Marni made sure to walk as slowly as she could so that Gio wouldn’t overwork his sore leg, taking several breaks along the way. The breaks weren’t all that contrived, like the ones yesterday, these views were equally stunning, taking her breath away.

The park’s layout consisted of different sections, each made to look like a terrace full of botanicals overlooking the coastline and ocean beyond. Grand statues dotted the landscape, as if a museum of sculptures had its pieces scattered throughout a magnificent garden. Marni had never seen anything like it. She was having trouble deciding exactly which visual feast she should focus her eyes on.

“What do you think?” Gio asked as they stood in a terrace full of colorful dahlias and luscious green leaves. Marble statues flanked them on either side, a cherub to the right and a maiden carrying a load of fruit on the left.

“I think I might have died and am right at this moment walking through Eden,” she answered, the awe in her voice clear to her own ears.

A commotion sounded from the pathway a few feet behind them. Excited voices, male and female alike, speaking in what sounded like German.
